Ande Bunbury Architects’ approach to architecture considers both the health and happiness of occupants and the impact of our buildings on the environment. The materials we work with are selected for low embodied energy, local provenance, durability and low toxicity.

We consider the energy required to manufacture, package and transport a material to site, its durability and lifespan and whether it can be recycled at the end of its life.

Whilst working on sustainability in the Built Environment with Sustainability Victoria from 2005-2008, Ande collected convincing data on the effects of materials and finishes on the quality of the indoor environment, health and workplace productivity. For commercial buildings it has been that demonstrated that additional costs incurred for the “green” features of a building can be recouped in 3-5 years through reduced sick leave and improved staff performance. Overseas data shows direct links between good Indoor Environment Quality (IEQ) and improved recovery rates in hospitals and learning rates in schools.
