project description Ande Bunbury Architects have been involved in a number of projects for the Hopevale Regional Council located in the Cape York Peninsula. These include a new BRACS (Broadcasting in Remote Aboriginal Communities) radio station, coffee shop, municipal works shed and feasibility studies and schematic designs for new Council Offices and a proposed recreation area. ABA’s work on the Hopevale Recreation area involved master planning a series of sporting facilities for a site on the edge of town.

These include an indoor basketball court/multi purpose hall & change rooms, outdoor swimming pool & change rooms, volleyball courts, rugby league ground, outdoor meeting area and landscaping, car parking, and a caretaker’s residence and structures for plant and storage requirements.

The buildings designed have a simple form and avoid complex construction techniques to enable construction using the skills of the local community. Given the tropical climate the buildings have maximum cross flow ventilation, low levels of insulation and highly durable materials.
